Chaotic traffic a reflection of deeper problems

New traffic laws do not seem to be achieving its goal of putting a stop to the slaughtering and general chaos that driving in Egypt is well known for. Two weeks into the application of the new laws which, besides hefty fines and prison terms for traffic violations,  require first aid kits and fire extinguishers in every car, drivers continue to double park, hold mobile phones while driving and honk their way past traffic lights and stop signs at breakneck speed.

According to a report from Los Angeles Times, suspicion and discontent among the population over the poor performance of government and its quick fix approach by enacting new legislation only leads to more corruption, bribery, tributes and someone highly connected inevitably making big bucks.

Driving in Egypt leaves more than 6,000 people killed and 30,000 wounded annually, according to the World Health Organization.
