U.S. citizen and Sheboygan engineer Mohammad Hamad was denied entry into Egypt for a monthlong vacation with his family. His children, along with his wife, Heather, were permitted to enter.

They had been planning their family’s monthlong trip to Egypt for a year.

Hamad said he was told by the Egyptian Embassy that he was denied entry because he was born in Gaza and would need a pre-approved visa with a special security clearance.

Today, Heather Gilvary-Hamad and the kids are getting to know their family in Egypt, and Hamad is back in Wisconsin awaiting word on whether he’ll get to join them.

A representative of the Egyptian consulate in Washington said this week that she knew of no rule requiring an American citizen born in Gaza to obtain a pre-approved visa, unless he presented Palestinian papers or planned to travel in Gaza.

Hamad says they took all the standard steps, including checking the Egyptian Embassy website, before traveling and saw nothing to suggest trouble on the trip.
