The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism has launched a new campaign, emphasizing the country’s appeal as the cradle of civilization.

The new campaign, called “Egypt: Where it all Begins” substitutes the previous 2006 campaign “The Gift of the Sun” which aimed to attract tourists for its unique climate and the warmth of its people.

Tourism to Egypt was affected by the global economic crisis this year, but it has steadily improved from a downturn of 13% in January to 3.5% at the end of November.

Another factor for this year’s decline pointed out by the Ministry of Tourism is the health concern caused by the AH1N1 virus, the infamous pig cull and the decision by the Ministry of Health to ask airline passengers to fill out a card about their health status upon entering the country.

Despite the return to an emphasis on Egypt’s universally known antiquities and wonders, the most recent tourism figures show a trend towards sun and sand at the Red Sea resorts, primarily from German, Italian and Russian tourists. This last group of visitors is expected to continue to increase as the Russian economy improves. The World Tourism Organization predicts that by 2020 Russia will be the number 10 country sending tourists abroad. Currently, Egypt is the third preferred travel destination for Russian tourists, but that figure may soon climb to number one.

I believe I’ve seen some of these ads on the London Tube. They are quite ‘magical’, a beautiful blond (?!) lady in front of the pyramids. I’ll grab a photo of it next time I encounter one, but in my opinion, it stressed the ‘myth’ to much, rather than the actual interesting things to see and do and enjoy.
